![]() “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Abrupt noises may startle us, but they don’t necessarily change our direction permanently. Hearing something doesn’t always jerk us into motion. But listening – being slow to speak and slow to anger – produces the good fruit of the Holy Spirit. Like James says, human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. There are moments in my personal life when my soul is unsettled, I simply say the name of Jesus out loud until my soul calms down! We can back down from our natural human reaction of offense, defense, anger, and stormy emotions, and allow the peace that surpasses all understanding to activate in our lives. Listening requires us to be “slow to speak and slow to become angry.” It’s human to have this immediate reaction, but living our lives within the love of Christ allows us the power of pause. ![]() We can allow our initial reactions to spew forth, which will often result in thunderclouds of anger, some flashes of rage, and then a mess of regret and hurt to clean up in the aftermath of the storm. In those moments, James is cautioning, we have a choice as to what to do with what our ears are hearing. When we hear something which unsettles our souls, we often find ourselves in a fight for the peace and joy we have in Christ Jesus! We turn over words in our minds, and allow downward spiraling thoughts to spin. The apostle James wrote, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” ( James 1:19-20). Listening to His call on our lives leads us to the “more than we can ever ask for or imagine” plans God has for our lives. The assurance of our faith is built upon the firm foundation of the Living Word of God. Our faith requires active obedience, not just a good feeling of fleeting happiness. It is only through Jesus that we come to the Father, and not by hearing, but by turning to listen. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” ( John 1:17-18). “For the law was given through Moses grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. When we listen to the Word of God, it suggests we are tuned in to the Spirit’s work in our lives. It’s the alive and active Word of the Living God. It isn’t a collection of stories for us to hear. Many hear of Christ Jesus, but not all listen. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him” ( Matthew 11:27).įaith in Christ is an active decision. “All things have been committed to me by my Father. We can hear something passively, but when we listen, we are engaged. Perhaps this is why God gave us two ears and one mouth in the hopes that we’d listen twice as often as we speak.” This type of listening assumes a reaction. ![]() “We can deceive ourselves so easily, so to avoid that, he suggests we listen to increase our learning and how to apply that learning, called wisdom,” Jack Wellman explains. “That’s the best guidance you’ll ever get. In the verse above, listen, which in the New American Translation of the Bible is the word, hear, means: to hear, listen, obey. Those who are deaf listen by seeing, lip reading, and sign language, proving there is a depth to listening beyond just noise. Listening requires more than the audible detection of sound. “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” ( Proverbs 1:5).

![]() The story sort of jumped from point to point quickly, and certain important information and plot points were skimmed over. It felt very disjointed and at many points throughout the story, I was left thinking “Wait, what happened?!?!”. ![]() One thing, I didn’t love about this book, was the writing structure. It was also very enlightening to see how these two characters expressed their concerns and fears, even how they dealt with the hardships they were facing. I’m such a sucker for anything cute and damn their text relationship was soooo cute. I’m not going to lie, I was smiling like an idiot. ![]() I enjoyed a lot of aspects of this book: The diversity of the main characters and the complexity of both their unique situations, but I especially loved the relationship between Penny and Sam. However, she did grow on me and I enjoyed her character flaws and the complexity of her character as it made her feel very real. She was so funny, and I adored that about her straight away, but for a decent chunk of the book, I found her to be very one toned and boring, and sometimes very judgemental and rude. Penny in particular took awhile to grow on me. While they’re both very smart and funny, they are complex characters with a lot of emotional baggage, and in the beginning while I found them both to be interesting, I struggled to connect with them. Both our main characters are very quick witted and sassy. In the beginning, it was quickly made apparent that this book was going to be full of so much wit. However, thankfully, Emergency contact is one of those pretty books that also delivers with an enjoyable story. I have such a soft spot in my heart for pretty books (as I’m sure a lot of us do). I’m one of those shameless book cover buying people. If I’m being 100% honest, my interest in this book first began simply because the cover is absolutely gorgeous. Still, they swap numbers and stay in touch-via text-and soon become digitally inseparable, sharing their deepest anxieties and secret dreams without the humiliating weirdness of having to see each other. When Sam and Penny cross paths it’s less meet-cute and more a collision of unbearable awkwardness. He knows that this is the god-awful chapter of his life that will serve as inspiration for when he’s a famous movie director but right this second the seventeen bucks in his checking account and his dying laptop are really testing him. He works at a café and sleeps there too, on a mattress on the floor of an empty storage room upstairs. Literally, figuratively, emotionally, financially. When Penny heads to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer, it’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind. Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she somehow managed to land a boyfriend, he doesn’t actually know anything about her. Instead, the book offers an insatiable curiosity about how it is we keep finding ways to hold onto one another. For Penny Lee high school was a total nonevent. Hybrid in form and set in New England, West Texas, and a landlocked province of China, among other places, Your Emergency Contact Has Experienced an Emergency refuses neat categorizations and pat answers. With irrepressible humor and play, these anarchic poems celebrate life, despite all that would crush aliveness. And sometimes, its pages record the dropping of a call, a failure or refusal to pick up. Whispered-in-a-classroom emergency calls. Always at work in the wrecked heart of this new collection is a switchboard operator, picking up and connecting calls. In his highly anticipated second collection, Chen Chen continues his investigation of family, both blood and chosen, examining what one inherits and what one invents, as a queer Asian American living through an era of Trump, mass shootings, and the COVID-19 pandemic. It's a neat addition being able to customize the loadout for each level or replay a level starting with only the sickles. The game is broken up into three episodes of 11 levels each which all can be tackled individually (once finished at least once) through the level select. Every level (30 + 3 secret levels) feels unique and well put together, with perhaps the exception of E3M9. The stylistic design reminds me of how N64 games looked, with enemies and effects sometimes being extremely angular and low-poly compared to the more high-res PC versions. The gameplay and movement is extremely tight and plays pretty much as Quake does, complete with rocket jumping, bunny hopping, weapon and enemy design. Mostly I believe Dusk takes it's inspirations from Quake, Blood with a smattering of Redneck Rampage and Half Life. ![]() The simpler-style gluten free yeast bread recipes like this one are still really valuable, even in my house where I have all the ingredients to make the “newer” style of gluten free yeast bread. Tips for preparing this gluten free naan bread recipe There are a lot of “lean” recipes in the book that don't require butter, yogurt, milk or eggs. Since the gluten free bread flour blend behaves so much more like conventional flour, it's actually much easier for bakers who can have dairy, but can't have eggs. The newer style of gluten free bread also stays fresher for longer. The beauty of those recipes is that the dough is much more what you'd expect from gluten-containing bread dough, and the bread can be made into any artisan style at all. Plus, that sort of traditional yeast-bread baking is enough art-plus-science that I created an online course called Gluten Free Yeast Bread Basics for those of you who wanted a deep dive. ![]() It requires that you hunt down two new ingredients, Expandex modified tapioca starch and whey protein isolate, both of which thankfully have become much more readily available since the publication of that book in 2013. It can be more expensive, and more time-consuming. I added some special ingredients that really substitute for gluten in the newer yeast bread recipes, and I adore them.īut I do understand that the newer style of gluten free yeast bread baking that I created in Bakes Bread is not a realistic possibility for everyone. When I wrote my third book ( GFOAS Bakes Bread), I set out to break the mold on gluten free bread. The newer style can be made using a handheld mixer with the dough hook attachments. A handheld mixer won't work.Ī bowl with a spoon and a lot of elbow grease might work, but I find that it's quite difficult to get the proper consistency that way. The one drawback of the preparation of these “old-style” bread recipes is that they call for using the paddle attachment of a stand mixer. Plus, they all require enrichments to compensate for any real replacement for the gluten that is so essential to conventional yeast-bread baking. The first generation of gluten free bread recipes was in the “batter-style,” with dough made with a paddle attachment in a stand mixer that had to be much wetter and more fragile than conventional yeast-bread baking. This bread recipe is made in the “old style,” the kinds of bread that I think of as the first generation of gluten free yeast bread baking. I've developed plenty of gluten free bread recipes like that, and they work, taste great and are a lovely starting-point. It's a lovely way to complete a simple meal and make it feel really special. ![]() The dough can be made up to 2 days ahead of time (3 if you're good with some serious yeasted flavor development) and then shaped, rolled, and fried in the few minutes before mealtime. These enrichments, especially the yogurt in this recipe, make this bread dough quite easy to handle-and the resulting naan bread tender, fragrant and delicious. Naan is a flatbread that very similar to pita bread, but it's a pretty highly enriched bread. In bread-baking, enrichments just refer to things like fat (ghee and butter here in this recipe), yogurt or milk, and eggs. Here, we make ours in a hot skillet, and we're able to get all the browning you need for an authentic-tasting Indian flatbread. I haven't tried it, but I bet you could even use this very gf naan bread recipe to make this in the shaped clay oven called a tandoor. ![]() I've never seen it made without gluten in a restaurant, though. I'm no expert on Indian cuisine, but I've had tender, pillowy naan bread in an authentic Indian restaurant. Like all naan, it's great for sopping up every last delicious bit of your favorite saucy gluten free dinners. Made with plain yogurt for extra tenderness, this smooth, pliable and rich gluten free naan bread makes any meal feel special. Why you'll love this gluten free naan bread recipe Make the dough ahead of time, and then fry it up in a pan in minutes! This gluten free naan bread is made extra soft and tender with yogurt, eggs and a bit of butter or ghee in the dough. Inactive ingredients: amyl acetate, camphor, ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol, n-butyl acetate, nitrocelluloseĪn antiseptic is built into the product, so there’s no need to worry about harboring germs. New-Skin Liquid Bandage ingredientsĪctive ingredient: Benzethonium Chloride (0.2%) Eventually it flakes off on its own (usually after the cut or crack has sealed), but if you’d like to remove it before then, the instructions say to apply a fresh coat of New-Skin Liquid Bandage and then wipe it off right away. And you don’t have to worry about losing it due to water exposure-it’s fully waterproof, and you can apply a second coating if you think you’d like a bit of extra security. New-Skin Liquid Bandage is liquid, so it’s designed to fill any kind of crack, wherever it falls on your hand. Though you can try to stick one or multiple bandages on the area, you end up bending your finger(s) as you go about your normal activity, which causes the bandage to lose its stickiness, which leads to problem #1 again. These are also precisely the hardest areas to bandage. Bandages come in a variety of sizes, but usually the cracks in your hands end up in places that flex (your joints, the knuckles, etc.).It always bothered me that the thing that was supposed to be helping me heal was actually starting the itchy -> scratching -> cracking cycle all over again. For those who have eczema, or sensitive skin, the adhesive of the bandage itself can often more irritation to your already-itchy, inflamed skin.Bandages don’t stay put when you wash your hands or even while you’re sleeping-you’ll inevitably find out that the bandage fell off due to water exposure or friction. Here were the problems I had with regular solid bandages: It won me over when i woke up one morning and saw that a big crack in my hand (which usually takes a few days) had healed overnight. But one day, I finally discovered a wonderful alternative: liquid bandages! Specifically, New-Skin Liquid Bandage, which already includes antiseptic built into a flexible liquid bandage. ![]() Slapping a bandage over the crack (after applying a moisturizer like Vaseline) can help it heal, but there are a few problems with bandages (which I’ll get into later on in this post). Anyone who’s had hand eczema will understand right away when I say that, if you have severely dry skin, it inevitably starts to crack, and then it starts to bleed. |
